This is the 1879 model Reichs revolver also known as the Cavalry model.
This particular one is a rarer one made by MAUSER in 1881 and is date stamped on the left side of the frame 1881. But this is the millitary issue date mark so was made before the date. Several other markings can be found on the revolver along with the 10.6 on the barrel for the caliber.
The revolver is in very good condition with the original finish mostly turning brown but you can still make out a blue hue in it when the sun is on it here and there!
There are a few light nicks and dings in the metal from use but the edges are all good so not heavily worn. The markings and serial numbers are all good too. The MAUSER 1880 OBERNDORF mark on the frame is nice and crisp.
The original wood grips are excellent with no chips and excellent wood to metal fit and the original lanyard ring is inplace. The scews on this revolver are original and superb too, they have never been off the gun!
Everything works perfect on this revolver. The loading gate and safty work superb. The action is excellent with super indexing and solid lockup (The Germans when they tested the Colt and Smith&Wesson before making the Reichsrevolver when not too impressed with the lockup on the US made revolvers, so mad theirs rock solid!). The hammer spring is strong too and the revolver cylinder ticks very nicely at half cock.
The bore is excellent, shiney with crips rifeling.
The unit marks on this revolver have not been struck out like so many, so i has not been reissued! The 'A' possibly stands for an Artillary unit but i am not sure!!!
The frame and all parts but the cylinder and cylinder pin are serial number marked 1821. The cylinder and pin however are numberd 2236. Just over 400 later in the run. However, both the frame and the cylinder have the Wurttemberg 4 antler marking. All of Wurtemberg's orders came from Mauser until 1891 so the cylinder and pin are definity made by Mauser and have been on the gun from new or almost new, they have exactly the same patina as the rest of the gun so where perhaps mix up by the factory or maybe a later battlefield mix up! Incidentallt the Antler proof mark of Wurttemberg is from part of their royal coat of arms!
This is a big impressive revolver, a real collectors peice and an early 1879 model.
Many thanks for looking, any questions are welcome. |
