This is a Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 - 1/2 Second Issue Revolver in
.32 five shot rim fire. In absolutely excellent condition. 3
˝” barrel with fluted cylinder and rosewood bird’s head butt profile
grips.
This is one of the finest Second Issue Model’s I have ever come across and I would describe it as in excellent condition.
Nickel
plating at around 95%. The only major wear is on the cylinder extractor
with minor wear on exposed edges on the cylinder and top rib of the
barrel (and this has turned to white metal). No powder burns whatsoever
at the rear of the barrel as is normally found on models of this era. I
hope the pictures tell the story.
The nickel plating retains its
original colour, it has not turned “milky white” and the nickel has not
“frosted” as is often the case on models of this era.
Very good mechanical action with all springs working, an example that has seen little use and has been cherished.
The
Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 -1/2 Second Issue Revolver (a.k.a. New
Model 1 – ˝) was manufactured between 1868 and 1875 with a total run of
about 100,700, in .32 long calibre, with a 5 – shot fluted cylinder in
2 – ˝ and 3 – ˝ inch round barrels.
Serial numbering continued
the range begun by the Model 1 – ˝ First Issue Revolver, from about
26,301 to 127,100. This model is numbered 68,255 so that puts it at
about mid production range.
S&W Company name and address marking, with 1855, 1859 and 1865 patent dates clearly stamped on the top of the barrel.
The
Second Issue was an improved version of the First Issue revolver, the
Second Issue has a more streamlined appearance. Internally it features
the cylinder stop in the topstrap, rather than in the bottomstrap as on
the First Issue.

Often
referred to as S&W’s “swing-up” model, the spent shells are
extracted by removing the cylinder and sliding it over the extractor to
push out the spent shells.
This model is made for an obsolete calibre cartridge so can be legally held in the UK.
