This is a deactivated .44 Remington New Model Army, made in Italy by Westerner’s Arms.
The New Model Army Revolver was made between c 1863 and 1875. Total quantity estimated at approximately 122,000. A percussion revolver in .44 caliber, six-shot round cylinder with an 8” octagonal barrel, with blued finish, a casehardened low spur hammer and safety notches on the cylinder shoulders between nipples.
This is an example of one of the major handguns of the American Civil War. The New Model Army was the stiffest competitor to Colt’s Model 1860 Army and was considered technically superior to the Colt Army model and stronger.
The New Model Army was also the last of Remington’s .44 caliber percussion revolvers. The famous showman William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody carried a “New Model Army” for buffalo hunting and the Indian Wars and claimed….. “This old Remington Revolver I carried and used for many years in Indian wars and Buffalo killing, and it never failed me”.
This is an excellent reproduction of the New Model Army revolver produced by Remington and is in excellent condition. Manufactured by Westerner’s Arms, with virtually untouched screws. It cycles and indexes perfectly.
It carries Birmingham proof marks on the cylinder, frame and barrel.
