Which replacement front door to choose?

Some options for a modern new front door

It used to be said that “an Englishmans’ Home is His Castle” and whilst in todays’ inclusive society this may sound terribly misogynistic, the saying still contains large elements of relevance.

People do very often judge the occupants of a house by the state of the front door – so make sure yours is good one!

What type of front doors are best?

replacement front doorWell, there is a good case to be made for a solid Oak front door. Very long lasting and visually appealing. But they can be quite expensive at the upper end of the market.

Aluminium front doors, in our opinion, with woodgrain effect finishes look superb. But you can expect to pay between £1,000 to £1,500 on average.

UPVC front doors have come up with some nice designs – options for colours & timber effect finishes can help to make them look very nice.

The advantage for UPVC doors is that they are significantly cheaper than Aluminium or hardwood.

For the cheapest front doors, you are going to be looking at some kind of softwood. However, you need to keep on top of the maintenance in order to keep them in good condition. Left alone, a softwood door will deteriorate quite quickly.

So, our top door is hardwood, followed by Aluminium – if you have the budget.
